Manchester Local Image Collection contains over 80,000 images of Manchester and its suburbs. The original images are mainly photographs with some prints, drawings, watercolours and postcards, dating from the eighteenth century to the present day. The pictures of people, streets and buildings illustrate all aspects of the social, industrial, religious and transport history of the city. Between 1950 and 1972 the Manchester Amateur Photographic Society carried out an almost complete street by street survey of the city, showing the suburban streets before the major clearances and redevelopment during that period. Simple Search | Advanced Search | Detailed Search
You may define your own search by using one of the three search forms available to you:
- Simple Search allows you to perform a general query on the collection; searches you may wish to enter here include street names, area names and dates. You can enter multiple search terms in the box, and surround phrases with quotation marks ("); this is particularly useful when searching for streets.
- Advanced Search is for advanced, Google-like searching.
- Detailed Search allows queries on specific fields such as title, date or keyword. Please note that, in keyword searching, keywords are made up of more than one word eg World War II. You will need to put hyphens between the words (ie World-War-II). To help with keyword searching you can use the drop-down menu on the right of the keyword box.

You can obtain higher quality black and white laser prints at a cost of 50p (6x4), £1.00 (8x6) or 75p (6x4 with text) if you visit Manchester Archives and Local Studies within Central Library in person. Please note, however, that you cannot use the image identifier (the number prefixed by 'm') to search for images in the library, so please make a note of the title and date of your image.
These images are made available for personal enjoyment or private study only. Anyone wishing to reproduce, exhibit, or make commercial use of an image in any medium (including books, newspapers, television, films, public exhibitions, websites or computer programmes) must first seek permission from Manchester Archives and Local Studies.
